Trauma Treatment and Management

Dr. Turab Syed is a fellowship-trained trauma specialist with extensive experience in treating a wide range of orthopaedic injuries. His trauma fellowship training ensures that patients receive expert care for acute injuries and complex trauma cases.

What is Trauma?

Trauma is defined as a sudden incident causing physical injury. It is a broad term describing all types of injuries affecting the muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints, nerves, blood vessels, or bones that most commonly occur during sudden, violent events such as car accidents, falls, or sports injuries.

Orthopaedic trauma focuses on the injuries affecting the musculoskeletal system — the bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, and muscles. These injuries can range from simple fractures to complex, life-threatening injuries.

Types of Fractures Treated:

  • Simple fractures
  • Comminuted fractures (multiple bone fragments)
  • Open fractures (where bone breaks through the skin)
  • Intra-articular fractures (fractures extending into a joint)
  • Stress fractures
  • Pathological fractures (fractures through diseased bone)

Treatment Approaches

Non-Surgical Management

  • Casting and splinting
  • Closed reduction (realigning bones without surgery)
  • Physical therapy
  • Pain management

Surgical Management

  • Open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) — plates, screws, or rods
  • External fixation — external frame to stabilise severely fractured bones
  • Intramedullary nailing — inserting a rod through the centre of a bone
  • Minimally invasive plate osteosynthesis (MIPO)
  • Arthroscopic procedures for joint injuries
